Las Fallas is one of Valencia’s most attractive festivals. It is held on Saturday 17th March in a contest of art, ingenuity and good taste to announce the arrival of spring. In just a few days , local residents bring out some seven hundred gigantic cardboard monuments called "ninots" that can reach up to 20 meters high, while the city is filled with colour and gunpowder.
To end the festival, on 19th March at 12 p.m., all these spectacular creations are burned in the midst of a fantastic spectacle of light, music and fireworks). All but one "ninot ", chosen by the people, is not burnt and, goes on to become part of the city’s Fallero Museum collection.
Valencia receives over a million visitors every year, who walk round the city amidst the smell of gunpowder, drinking hot chocolate and munching on pumpkin fritters.
